EUROTOX has its roots in the European Society for the Study of Drug Toxicity, which was founded in Zurich.
The first annual scientific meeting was held in Paris.
As the society's interests started to extend into toxicology areas other than drug toxicology, it decided to change the name to European Society of Toxicology (EST) taking effect at the scientific meeting in Carlsbad.
With the rapid growth of national societies membership EST and 14 national societies (Finland, France, the GermanFederalRepublic, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom) decided to establish the Federation of European Societies of Toxicology (FEST) at the EST congress in Kuopio.
To create unnecessary duplications, at the 5th IUTOX Congress in Brighton, EST and FEST merged andadopted the name EUROTOX.
EUROTOX consists of 30 national societies including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine in addition to the previous ones
