The Society of Toxicology (SOT) and AstraZeneca are very generously sponsoring nine $2,000 travel fellowships for scientists to attend the SOT Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., USA (March 6–10, 2011). Applicants may be either junior or senior scientists, reside in countries where toxicology is underrepresented, and have an active research program or currently be active in the practice of toxicology.
Take the EuPFI Survey to assess the need of safety/toxicity database of excipients likely to used in medicines for children. European Paediatric Formulation Initiative (EuPFI) is developing an evidence-based database, addressing safety issues and toxicity aspects of pharmaceutical excipients likely to be used in medicines for children.
This database should act as a single repository and provide easy access to important information from key resources. The database will be available online and so will lead to a global approach to paediatric formulation development, and ultimately highlight gaps in excipient knowledge. EuPFI aims to perform a global survey to assess the need of this excipients database and further develop a prototype database based on the user’s needs. The long term goals are to implement this prototype database with several high priority excipients, to collect initial feedbacks from users for refinement, eventually include more excipients and maintain the finalized database.EuPFI has developed a survey questionnaire to capture the broad feedback from potential users. The questionnaire includes question on how you locate safety and toxicity information of the excipients for paediatric medicine development and your views on development of this database as a single online source and its content.
Fellowships for Scientists in the Developing World
The International Programme for Higher Education and Research (IPHER) provides over 280fellowships annually to scientists in developing countries such as Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Pakistan.
The Fellowships, available for various lengths of time, are designated for postgraduate, postdoctoral and advanced research. BRIEF DETAILS OF EACH PROGRAMME
EFSA invites scientific experts to join its Scientific Committee and Panels.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) haslaunched a call (1) to renew the membership of the ANS and CEF Panels and (2) to expand the reserve list of its Scientific Committee and its other 8 Scientific Panels. Scientists are invited to respond to the call, which closes on 15 September 2010.
An ‘Early Career Investigator Award’ is presented annually by the British Toxicology Society. The award is made in recognition of their contribution to toxicological sciences. This contribution may take the form of a single seminal piece of work or sustained achievement in an area of toxicology.
Norman Aldridge Travelling Fellowship 2010has been award this year to Dr Daniel Antoine who is currently a post-doctoral Research Associate at the MRC Centre for Drug Safety Science, Dept. Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Liverpool.
FELLOSHIPS TO ATTEND ICTXII IN BARCELONA
Along with the Junior and Senior Travel Fellowships to attend ICT XII in Barcelona, IUTOX has two additional opportunities for young scientists to attend this meeting! Applications for all four types of ICT awards administered by IUTOX are due February 15, 2010. International Congress of Toxicology IUTOX Trainee Awards: Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are invited to submit their International Congress of Toxicology (ICT) poster abstracts for consideration in the IUTOX Trainee Award poster competition. Submissions will consist of: (1) The poster abstract, as it will be presented at the ICT Meeting, in electronic form (Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat pdf) in a 8.5" by 11" page format with a 12 or 14 font size (2) a two-page letter from the faculty advisor that indicates the significance and potential impact of the work, also in electronic form. The review of nominations is the responsibility of the IUTOX Education Commission. Winners will receive a plaque and a monetary award. Graduate Students: Plaques for 1st through 3rd place as well as monetary award (1st Place $500, 2nd Place $300, Third Place $100). Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award: Only one will be awarded and it will include a plaque and $500. Awards will be announced at the ICT meeting. International Congress of Toxicology IUTOX Early Toxicologist Award: The purpose of the IUTOX Early Toxicologist Award is to recognize and stimulate outstanding research in toxicology by newly established investigators. The Award consists of a plaque and reimbursement of the travel expenses incurred to attend the International Congress of Toxicology (ICT); the Award will be presented once every three years, at the ICT meeting. In the year of the ICT meeting, a candidate must have less than 10 years experience since obtaining his/her highest earned degree. Originality of the research, the significance of the contribution and its impact in the field of Toxicology, in addition to the clarity and excellence of data presentation, are important criteria. Candidates will not be judged in comparison with the work of more mature and experienced investigators. Nominations should be made by the home Society, or, if the applicant doesnot have a national toxicology society, by his/her department. Nominations shall be accompanied by: Two letters of recommendation from senior colleagues describing the importance of the candidate?s work and information on how the sponsor believes the candidate's career will advance the field of Toxicology. The contribution of the candidate to any jointly authored reprints and manuscripts should be made clear. Up to three published articles, or manuscripts accepted for publication, that are representative of the candidate's work. A two page summary of the candidate's research career. The candidate's curriculum vitae, of no more then two pages. Send applications to: IUTOX Headquarters, 1821 Michael Faraday Dr., Suite 300, Reston, VA 20190, or by e-mail. Review of nominations is the responsibility of the IUTOX Science Commission. The Award recipient will be notified by March 1 of the year of the ICT meeting. Formal presentation of the Award will be made at the ICT meeting, at which the Award recipient will be invited to give a 15 minute presentation. Registration, travel and hotel expenses for the Award recipient will be reimbursed in accordance with the IUTOX travel reimbursement
policy. Information about Junior and Senior Travel Fellowships may be found on our web site.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING TRISK AVAILABLE FROM EUROTOX EUROTOX is offering two grants of EUR 2,500 each to potential non-industry participants to attend TRISK, the European Toxicology. Risk Assessment Training Programme, a programme co-financed by the European Commission Second Programme of Community Action in the field of Health (2008-2013) under the priority action to improve citizens' safety. The TRISK selection committee will select potential candidates fulfilling the requirements, while the final grant recipients will be selected by EUROTOX. Grants to recipients will be distributed based on actual travel and accommodation costs. EUROTOX is a key collaborating partner to disseminate project results across key stakeholders and other target groups within your geographic region. For more information about TRISK can be found in project website at www.trisk-project.eu
Second announcement of the new European Toxicology Risk Assessment Training Programme TRISK. TRISK announcement-poster.TRISK_application. Please find in the brochure new information on: 1) timing and content of the course modules; 2) possibility to waive participation in certain course modules; 3) extended number of countries eligible to the programme; 4) additional financial support available; 5) extended application deadline. The objective of the training programme is to provide a comprehensive training in toxicological risk assessment that serves as a model for future European training in risk assessment for accredited European risk assessors. The training programme is intended for individuals who have previous training or experience in toxicology and who would like to pursue a career in risk assessment in Europe in industry, regulatory authorities, consultancy or academia. The training programme includes eight 1-week-long course modules and an 450 hour-long applied training at an institution performing risk assessments. The training programme is organised by TRISK, a project that is funded by the European Union, in the framework of the Second Programme of Community Action in the field of Health (2008-2013). Journal of Genetic Toxicology (JGT)
JGT publishes complete papers on the testing of chemicals for genetic toxicity, on the mechanism of action of genotoxic agents, on screening results for environmental compounds (genotoxic agents), and on the validation of new methods and assessments of genetic risks resulting from the induction of mutations. Research articles are invited on the study of genetic damage, the agents that induce such damage, the mechanisms that respond within cells and the potential consequences of the damage or the damage responses.
