On 2 December 2004, Professor Eugenio Vilanova sadly passed away. Professor Eugenio Vilanova was a toxicologist born in Villena (Alicante, Spain), who graduated in Chemical Sciences in Valencia (Spain) and obtained his PhD in the University of Alicante, where he was a founder of this university and spent a long period of his professional life from 1980 to 1997, when he moved to found another university, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, where he developed the rest of his career until 2018, when he was appointed Professor Emeritus and where he followed his work until the end of his days.
Professor Eugenio Vilanova was along his career an individual member, member of the Executive Committee and an honorary member of EUROTOX, and was responsible for the organisation of the EUROTOX Congress in 1996 and the joint EUROTOX-IUTOX Congress in Barcelona in 2010.
Throughout his career, his main research interests have focused on many topics such as mechanisms of neurotoxicity, developmental toxicity and biotransformation of different pesticides, always from a molecular mechanistic point of view, which corresponded to his basic background as a chemist. He was also heavily involved in risk assessment studies of exposure to pesticides. His scientific production was long but could be summarised with more than 150 articles in indexed journals, together with more than 25 book chapters and more than 18 supervised PhD theses.
We send our sincere condolences to his widow Leonor, his sons and daughters Héctor, Emma, Inés and Marcos, and his sons and daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
